Air Sampling and Analyses
Assessment of corrosivity of metal cables and switch gear in air for National Power Distributor in New Zealand
The assessment entailed establishing back ground concentrations and concentrations of ambient corrosive gasses in various regions on the North Island. The assessment was carried out by Geo & Hydro using an in-house developed method. The extraction chemicals and analytical support was provided by Hill Laboratories.

Installing HDPE Vertical Barriers
Geo & Hydro has extensive experience in designing and installing hydraulic control systems to contain contaminated groundwater. One effective method is the installation of HDPE liners (pictured above), which act as a barrier to prevent the spread of contaminants.
Other containment strategies include bentonite slurry walls, semi-permeable barriers, and funnel-and-gate systems filled with reactive materials. These materials - such as slow-release electron donors or acceptors like carbon, zero-valent iron, and select non-toxic byproducts from the food industry - support low-cost, long-term remediation of groundwater plumes.

On-Site Testing
On-site testing enables rapid decision-making during remediation projects, allowing for real-time adjustments to test regimes during pilot studies. This is particularly valuable for in-situ soil vapour (ground gas) and contaminated groundwater containment and remediation systems.
Geo & Hydro operates advanced testing equipment, including X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysers for heavy metals, portable Photo-Ionisation Detectors (PID) for aromatic hydrocarbon vapours, and landfill gas analysers. Specialised sampling methods can be tailored to meet specific client requirements (see Air Sampling and Analyses for more details).
We also utilise specialised solid-state extraction tools for analysing brominated compounds, such as flame retardants in landfill leachate, as well as ultra-low micro-extraction techniques for detecting highly volatile chlorinated solvents. These capabilities ensure precise, site-specific analysis to support effective remediation strategies.

History of the Geo & Hydro Group
In 1988 Geo & Hydro was formed out of Oil Recovery Services Ltd incorporated April 1988, the First New Zealand Company Specialised in Oil Pollution Assessment and Abatement, servicing all four oil companies in New Zealand. In 1989 Ben Keet, who founded both companies incorporated Geo & Hydro Consultants Ltd and started a subsidiary company in Melbourne, Vic in 1990. Geo & Hydro specialised in service station assessment and remediation. Hundreds of service stations, depots and several large terminals were remediated and made ready for auction.
In 1993 Geo & Hydro set up an office in The Netherlands and in 1994 in the Grand Duche of Luxembourg focussing on the in-situ remediation of groundwater related issues of petroleum contaminated sites. From 1995 remediation of chlorinated solvent contaminated industrial properties became the main focus as well as military airfields of the Department of Defence. Most were multi-year projects required sophisticated computer controlled units. A few examples are presented in the Projects Gallery.
